Robert helped the integrating of schools by sending the US Marshals to help keep the crowd under control for the safety of the Little Rock Nine. This school, in Little Rock, Arkansas, was one of the first to integrate. The crowd of white Americans was infuriated. They tried to kill the nine African American kids and stormed the school by force with the help from cops. Robert also spoke out against the people who did not like school integration by saying he did not care what other people say and that integration is the law. Robert was a protector for those who could not protect themselves.

Robert protected the Freedom Riders. These were a group of 13 African American and white members of the Congress of Racial Equality that got on a bus in Washington D.C. and went to New Orleans to oppose segregation on interstate buses. When protesters tried to attack the Freedom Riders, Robert sent the police force to protect them on their trip. He also helped to get integrated buses by giving speeches in various places. That helped their cause. He also helped by supporting President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Civil Rights Bill of 1964 that gave equal rights to anyone using public facilities. He sent the riders to jail because he heard that the KKK was going to hurt the riders. He did this for their safety. This is why he is the great protector of the riders.
