JFK in WWII
Before John F. Kennedy was the president, he commanded a PT boat in World War II. One day, a Japanese destroyer battle ship rammed into Kennedy’s boat, injuring the whole crew. Kennedy suffered major wounds that put him in the hospital for almost a year. Two soldiers were killed on impact or drowned in the burning oil in the sea as the ship caught fire and sunk. Kennedy blamed this incident for his chronic stomach problems later in life. Because of this incident, Kennedy decided to retire from the Navy and start doing politics again.
John F. Kennedy was sworn into office as the 35th president of the United States and gave his inaugural address on January 20, 1961. From there on he worked from 7 am to late at night at about 11 or 12. Kennedy was one of the hardest working presidents in history. He helped the United States fight through the Cold War and spent his long hours commanding the Armies.
On March 6, 1961, Kennedy signed the Executive Order 10925, which forced government contractors to ensure anyapplicant to be hired, race unconsidered and treated well, race unconsidered. And despite Kennedy’s beliefs, the March on Washington included no lynchingsand this actually helped the cause, not worsened it. Later, he made strives to get the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 passed, although he didn’t survive to see it passed.
Throughout his presidency, Kennedy helped America fight in the Cold War. Those long hours he was putting in were making a difference. Except for one failure. On April 17, 1961, Kennedy sent 1,400 men to Cuba. The entire force was captured or killed. His first presidential campaign boasted that he would provide an anti-cold war democracy, and would do everything he could to end it.
November 22nd, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. The assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald, who was shot and killed two days later. When Kennedy was in a motorcade in Dallas, he had just over 1,000 days in office. Sadly, November 22nd, 1963 would mark an end to a great presidency. This incident would would make JFK one of the most well known, famous presidents in the history of the United States.
